Story behind the photograph:

Perhaps the most amazing and unexpected surprise. I set out with the University of British Columbia Astronomy Club in search of the stars. With high hopes to see the milkyway and with huge telescopes and equipment, we ventured more than four hours by car to reach this destination in Merritt, BC with the intention of viewing the stars. However when we got to the location all hope seemed lost as clouds were all we saw above us, so we waited and waited in our tents and cars hoping that the sky would clear up. After about an hour I decided to get out of the car and just set up my camera. I noticed there was a glow in the clouds in the distance which would totally ruin out chances of seeing the stars and asked the leader of the astronomy club who was next to me what it could be. He said he didn't know and I postulated that it could be the northern lights, to which he said it was highly unlikely. So I did what any curious photographer would do, I took a shot and noticed there was a tint in the glow off in the distance, at that point i knew what it was. Five minutes later the wind began to pull back the clouds to unveil this magical spectacle. The northern light, for the first time, right before my very eyes, a moment I will never forget.
